Chester’s origins lie in the vision of MV Ramaswamy and his relationship with leather. In 1986, he built a business processing high-quality leather goods for export from India, earning a reputation across Europe.
Drawn to the elegant forms of 19th-century European furniture, Ramaswamy was inspired to bring this traditional craft back to Bangalore, exploring them in an Indian context.
In 1994, he sent four of his most experienced craftsmen to the Netherlands, where they refined their skills in the specialist manufacture of deep-buttoned leather furniture. With this exchange of knowledge and skills, Chester’s was born.
